Nisan 10 – Israel Yom HaAliyah – יום העלייה – Aliyah day (“go up”)

The word Aliyah literally means to “go up”. It also commonly refers to the process of immigration to Eretz Yisrael – The promised land of Israel. The word “Aliyah” is also used in reference to Jewish prayer services, where a man is called and “goes up” to read and bless a portion of the Jewish law in the synagogue.

Yom HaAliyah – יום העלייה – Aliyah day was legislated for tenth day of the Hebrew month of Nissan but celebrations take place and are observed around the country on 7th day of the Hebrew month of Cheshvan.

On June 21, 2016, the Knesset voted in favor of adding Aliyah Day to the calendar. Aliyah Day will be celebrated on the tenth of the Hebrew month of Nisan Hebrew: י’ ניסן, when according to the Bible in the Book of Joshua, Joshua and the Israelites crossed the Jordan River at Gilgal into the Promised Land. This was the first documented “mass Aliyah.”
